Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use off-brand bobbins?

We recommend to use only BERNINA quality bobbins because using off-brand bobbins can cause unsatisfying thread tension and other problems.

My Stitchout App cannot find the machine

  1. Is my machine a BERNINA 790 PRO or a BERNINA 990? No other model currently offers this feature.
  2. Is the machine's WiFi turned on?

  1. Is the machine connected to the desired WiFi? Compare with smartphone. The name of the WiFi (SSID) must be absolutely identical on the smartphone and the machine.
  2. Is the machine in stitchout mode? Only then can the connection between the machine and the smartphone take place.
  3. In a guest WiFi, the devices may not be able to connect to each other.
  4. Is the machine and the smartphone logged in to the same WiFi? Turn WiFi off and on again on the machine and smartphone. Try again.

Does the B 990 have ECO Mode?

Yes, the ECO Mode function is on the B 990, but it is activated differently than other models. In the Main Menu select the Lock icon. The screen is now locked to prevent functions from being activated while sewing. Select the Lock/Unlock Sewing Functions toggle in the Lock Screen. This now behaves in the same manner as ECO Mode and will shut down all machine functions until the toggle is back on.

The Stitchout App finds my machine, but can't connect it

  1. Is the machine in stitchout mode?
  2. If this happens frequently, please enter the machine manually with SSID and password. See the operating instructions «Setting up WiFi connections»
  3. The WiFi regularly reassigns the IP address and therefore no longer finds the machine. Turn the machine off and on or reselect the WiFi and enter the password.

How do I save, rename, copy and paste files in the File Manager?

The full set of options for the File Manager are only available in the fullscreen mode. Select the Fullscreen mode icon and then select your options. Folders and files must be selected and then options (paste, copy, rename) can be applied as desired. Refer to the Help Center for additional information.

The Stitchout App does not show the embroidery progress

  1. If the smartphone was in sleep mode during embroidery, the machine must be connected in the app or Stichout app must be restarted.
  2. If the smartphone is no longer within range of your WiFi network, the embroidery progress can no longer be displayed, you only receive the messages.
  3. If the number of stitches in the embroidery design exceeds 100,000, the pattern preview will no longer be displayed.

How often should the machine be oiled?

The frequency of oiling depends on the number of the sewn stitches. We recommend to place a drop of oil onto the hook race before sewing for a longer period, but at least when the machine prompts you. When sewing bigger projects, you can oil the machine once a day.

The machine is running very slow.

Check the slide speed control on the front of the machine and move to the right. Here you can set the  maximum speed setting when sewing with the foot control or use it to adjust the speed when working with the start/stop button.

My machine doesn't see/find my WiFi network

  1. Is my machine's WiFi activated/logged in?
  2. Is my router turned on? To check: is my smartphone or other device connected to my WiFi network and working? Usually indicated with LED's on the router.
  3. Is my router enabled on 2.4 GHz? If not, please turn on/enable 2.4 GHz on the router. Many smartphones show in the WiFi settings which frequencies are set. For the check, access via a browser is usually necessary or the service provider can provide information.
  4. The machine is too far away from the router! Please compare with your smartphone (show the signal strength on the display) and, if necessary/possible, place the machine closer to the router. This is at least for verification.
  5. Is my WiFi hidden SSID? If so, then please set the configuration to visible or, alternatively, the SSID can be entered manually into the machine, see the operating instructions "Setting WiFi connections".
  6. Turn the WiFi router off and on again.
  7. After changing the name of the machine in the setup program, the machine must be switched off and on so that the connection can be activated and established.

My machine can't connect to my WiFi

  1. Does the router have a filter for MAC addresses? If so,
  2. Include the machine in the MAC addresses filter or
  3. Enable/disable the MAC address filter in the router.
  4. If the WiFi network is a business network, then a higher encryption may be required, e.g. WPA3 Enterprise. The BERNINA machine cannot do this, it supports WPA2 and WPA3 Personal.
  5. Re-enter the password for the desired WiFi network (SSID).
  6. Turn the WiFi router off and on again.
  7. After changing the name of the machine in the setup program, the machine must be switched off and on to connect.

The Camera icon is red in the Status Bar and cannot be activated

In Sewing, if the Camera icon is red, please have a technician check the machine to ensure camera is properly connected. In Embroidery, if the Camera icon is red, ensure that the embroidery module and hoop are properly attached and recognized. Camera is deactivated without these pre-requisities. The Camera is not possible to use during Embroidery Stitchout.

The lower thread indicator is not responding

There may be several reasons for this:
The door of the hook cover is open. Close it.
The sensor of the lower thread indicator is dirty and needs cleaning.
The lower thread indicator has been deactivated in "Setup". Select "Setup", "Monitoring functions" and "Activating the lower thread indicator".

Why are my stitches showing red in the Stitch Altering Area?

Stitches show in red when they cannot properly be sewn based on current configurations. Ensure you have the proper needle, presser foot and stitch plate on the machine and selected in the user interface. If the stitch still shows red there will be a collision with the current configuration, adjust as needed.

What is the purpose of Presser foot pressure?

The Presser foot pressure helps to feed the fabric evenly. I.e. heavier fabrics need more pressure (bigger number); delicate, especially softer fabrics like jersey need less pressure (smaller number). With the use of Presser feet with the Hopper mechanism (i.e. embroidery presser foot, BSR) a change of the Presser foot pressure does not bring any change of the fabric feed, as the moving of the fabric is done manually. The changes of the Presser foot pressure can be saved in the Personal Program.

How does 'Balance' of the BERNINA Dual Feed work?

On the screen, select 'Balance', then the Balance function for BERNINA Dual Feed. 'Balance' is used to fine-tune the feeding of the upper fabric layer compared to the lower layer. Refer to 'Balance/Fabric Feed' chapter in the user manual.

When is 'Manual Threading' used?

Whenever 'Automatic Threading' isn't possible, i.e. when using a twin or triple needle, a wing needle, needle no. 60 and when using the following presser feet: #50, #55, #80, #85, #86, #93.
